Samir Varma’s book The Science of Free Will。 Samir Varma’s book The Science of Free Will is mainly about how we function within the constraints of the laws of physics, in other words, about free will (and its correlated term, determinism)。 Obviously, this subject is not easy to tackle。 I know the difficulties faced when working on such a topics since I struggled myself with it within my articles“Some Dilemmas Concerning the Notion of Free Will” (2023) and “Is Conscience the Measure of a Person?” Samir Varma’s book The Science of Free Will。 Samir Varma’s book The Science of Free Will is mainly about how we function within the constraints of the laws of physics, in other words, about free will (and its correlated term, determinism)。 Obviously, this subject is not easy to tackle。 I know the difficulties faced when working on such a topics since I struggled myself with it within my articles“Some Dilemmas Concerning the Notion of Free Will” (2023) and “Is Conscience the Measure of a Person?” (2024)Samir aids his way towards the answer to the question if the human beings really have free will by speaking about what he calls ‘Free Will in Theory’ (FWIT) and ‘Free will in practice’ (FWIP)。 He engages here what I refer to in my own works as two different approached to Free Will: one which treats it metaphysically, i。e。 as being an ‘absolute’ notion, and one which deals with it pragmatically。 Varma implies, as I do in my publications, that while ‘FWIT’ does not exist ‘FWIP does in the sense that here is where we make our decisions (because, at the moment of the Big Bang “the ultimate cause, but not the proximate cause, of absolutely everything was set”)。It is fascinating to see how, in the process of analyzing the concept of Fre Will, Samir Varma touches on other notions as causality, compatibilism, wave function collapse, unitarity, fundamentalism, modularity, etc。The effort Varma puts into trying to convince us that free will exists is to be commended。 I am certain that his book will have many readers。Dr。 Elena Ene Drăghici-Vasilescu, University of Oxford 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review。Wow! This book was exactly what I needed to reconcile my growing belief or understanding that the universe, space-time, and everything in it is deterministic, while it being obvious that I and others seem to have free will, and chaos theory works to predict some things in computer science and other sciences as borrowed from physics。 With that is an explanation, that, of course, until something happen I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review。Wow! This book was exactly what I needed to reconcile my growing belief or understanding that the universe, space-time, and everything in it is deterministic, while it being obvious that I and others seem to have free will, and chaos theory works to predict some things in computer science and other sciences as borrowed from physics。 With that is an explanation, that, of course, until something happens nothing happens。 It discusses modules – discreet units in everything from brains to machines including computers。 The emergent nature of consciousness Is discussed, and how different entities and types have differences, although we’re made up of the same elements and subatomic particles。 The author goes into some elemental economics, which make sense from my own background。 The chapter on determinism was VERY DIFFICULT to get through, although I know how it basically works from philosophy classes and books, and understand (to a degree) how the subatomic physics behind it all works。 I’ve never seen it put together this way。 It took me awhile, but it gave me an understanding that I’ve been looking for philosophically for a long time。 。。。more

The Science of Free Will: Exploring the Intersection of Determinism, AI, and Beyond

The Science of Free Will: How Determinism Affects Everything from the Future of AI to Traffic to God to Bees

In this comprehensive exploration, we delve into the profound implications of determinism on various aspects of life。 From the advancements in artificial intelligence to the predictability of traffic patterns, and even the philosophical debates surrounding the concept of God, we provide insights into how these interconnected themes shape our understanding of free will。

Understanding Determinism

Determinism posits that every event or state of affairs, including every human action, is the result of preceding events in accordance with the natural laws。 This section unpacks the implications of this philosophy for human autonomy and decision-making。

The Future of AI and Free Will

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, the question of whether machines can possess free will emerges。 We explore how determinism might dictate AI behavior and decision processes, impacting our technological landscape。

Determinism and Religious Beliefs

The interplay between determinism and the existence of a higher power raises important questions。 This section examines how different religious perspectives interpret free will in the context of divine intervention。

Traffic Patterns and Predictive Models

Traffic behavior can often seem deterministic, governed by laws of physics and human behavior。 We discuss how understanding this can improve traffic management and urban planning。

The Life of Bees: Nature's Determinism

Bees, with their instinctive behavior guided by deterministic traits, are a fascinating case study。 We analyze their role in ecosystems and the implications of determinism on their survival strategies。
